This fantastic collection of 44 numbered, sculptured whales, mermaids, shark, and tuna came from a stately waterfront home on Puritan Road in Swampscott, MA that was built in 1720!
These antique floorboards are now a dazzling collection of Whales, Mermaids, Tuna, and Shark that I sculpted from these ancient boards. The boards were likely living trees in the 1400’s!
The dimensions of these boards are incredible. Some close to 2’ wide! These one-of-a-kind time capsules remind us of the long history of Swampscott.
Things of note from 1720:
· New England Economy: In Massachusetts, the first sperm whale was captured at sea by an American whaler from Nantucket, launching the New England offshore whaling industry.
