This is not driftwood. This antique board came from a house in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Is unclear when the home was originally built all that is known it was some point in the 1700s. You can see the vertical saw marks on this board showing that it was mailed prior to the invention of the circular saw. The dimensions are enormous! It is 6 feet long and 19 inches wide! A perfect not for an eye. It is likely that this board was a living tree in the 1600s possibly 1500s! A true time capsule of history. And additionally, on the head there are scratches known as fitter’s marks. Carpenter started using those back in the 1600s to identify where a board should go. Interestingly, it was often in Roman numerals and the Roman numeral IV was replaced on purpose with IIII to avoid confusion if the board was flipped upside down and read as VI.
